The existing garage and storage within a charming conservation area in Leicester has been underused and derelict for a number of years. The client required to change the use of the garage into a two storey apartment. As the scheme is within a conservation area, it was necessary to thoroughly consider to its local context. The proposal mimicked the local period window and door details and applied them to the exterior of the existing garage to create an efficient interior space with external facades that blend in with the traditional street scene. A number of original features such as the external lantern light and exposed garage opening structure remained to prevent the property looking overly domesticated.
